Best Birthday Bakeries

June 03, 2008

While the debate over butter cream versus that fluffy stuff versus fondant could go on for hours or days, chances are that your preschooler just wants to get their hands on the cake.  However, good taste starts early, and requires exposure to only the best.

Cupcake - Just what the name says.  They make some of the most imaginative and beautiful cupcakes I have ever laid my eyes on.  Including miniature versions of most of them.  The miniatures have all the class and imagination of the larger ones, but sized for munchkins.  (or mom on a diet) I tend to be a bit of a prude about the whole sugar for kids thing, and this was one I could get behind.  Their carrot cake is to die for, so you can even justify it as eating your veggies.  They do advance orders with minimums, or you can be unprepared like me and go in on late notice and just get a variety.  (though prepare to be teased if Kevin is there)  If you have no idea what to get, trust Kevin to pick an amazing selection.  Extra cool for the kids, see if you spot the Cupcake Mini Cooper around town.

The Wedge Community Coop - Since childhood allergies are becoming a larger and larger reality, sometimes what you need is the gourmet dairy free/vegan/wheat free option.  The Wedge makes decadent sweets that fit a variety of restricted diets.  I wasn't able to find a listing online, but give them a call to see what you can get in cake/cupcake form.  It is bound to still taste great.

Sarah Janes Bakery - This NorthEast bakery regularly gets voted best donuts.  However, they are a traditional bakery with reasonable prices for cakes that are still made with love.  You get to support a local neighborhood bakery, and while you're there, get one of those amazing donuts.

Wuollets - This institution is known for their incredible wedding cakes, and delicious treats.  They can make a variety of shapes and colors.  I'm pretty sure that the only limitation is your imagination and engineering.

Tunnel of Fudge - Not a buy your baked goods type? Then make this local classic using locally the locally invented Nordicware Bundt Pan.  My friends still remember getting this for their birthday when they were little.
