Moderately Random Updates

October 15, 2008

Kiddywampus has added Open Studio time on weekends. For working parents, there is now fun drop in art that works with your schedule. It is just in time for the weather to get worse. I can't wait until we have a free Saturday. Class wise they are adding dance classes (in November), and theater classes lead by staff from the Children's Theatre Company. (wow!) They've also added a section  Read more...

Baby Doesn't Love to Disco

October 09, 2008

Ever since I heard about Baby Loves Disco from my cool friends in Boston, I knew that I wanted to be able to take M. By the time I felt like I had time, they were off for the summer. When it started up this fall, I was bummed to find out that I was busy the first weekend. I was excited late this last week to find out that I could make it on Saturday. We showed up at 3 Saturday  Read more...

A Fangirl Moment (disguised as a kids event)

September 11, 2008

When I was in school, I discovered They Might Be Giants. They were funny, quirky, that perfect kind of odd that I was going for. I still know more about previous names of historic cities thanks to Istanbul (not Constantinople) than well, the people who don't know the song. I have been serenaded with Birdhouse in Your Soul. Now that I am a parent, I was happy to find out that they have  Read more...

Frugal Summer Entertainment?

August 15, 2008

If you've been reading the other Being Savvy blogs around here, you may have noticed a great bunch of tips for being frugal. There was also a great post recently on that local paper's parent blog, Cribsheet about the high cost of going to "kid" events and how it gets to be a bit much for a few hours of entertainment. I couldn't agree more. Summer may be winding to a close, but there are  Read more...

Summer Reads (No Reading Required)

July 15, 2008

This may not be the best place to admit it, but I'm pretty sure the closest that my parents got to kids books on tape when I was little was the radio playing Hitch hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. (the original, I'm pretty sure) M is still just pretty excited when something comes in the radio with a good rhythm, so we haven"t ventured much into the world of kids books on tape. However, that  Read more...

Ahh, Summer Vacation

July 11, 2008

I heard something for the first time this year, likely a result of high gas prices, the staycation. While backyard camping counts, why not head to one of the cool festivals around town. Here is a sampling of what is coming up this weekend and next. Dragon Festival - This weekend is the annual Dragon Boat races during the Dragon Festival at St. Paul's Lake Phalen, and it is where  Read more...

Playlist for All Ages - Like a Good First Ave Show

July 01, 2008

Before I get into my summer song list, I need to warn you that I grew up going to folk festivals. I would hang at the kids area and soak it in during the day, and then see the main stage at night with parents. With this came major exposure to Canadian artists, and well, you know, lots of folk music. I know what a reel is, and while it may have taken 20 or so years, I really love bluegrass.  Read more...

Outdoor Music and Fun in The 'Burbs

June 26, 2008

I've been trying to branch out my searches for things to do to outside of Minneapolis and St. Paul itself and I found some great outdoor concerts in Edina.   (I also found some movies, but they all start at dusk, and do you really want to push bed time to 11? yeah, didn't think so)  The daytime bedtime friendly concerts are on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Centennial Lakes Park .  They are  Read more...

Planes trains and automobiles - Lake Harriet Streetcar Line

June 06, 2008

If you thought commuting via rail was new to the Twin Cities, then you haven't heard about the old streetcar lines that once ran all over Minneapolis. The availability of cars and conversion to an all bus system in the 1950's killed off the line, but it was brought back to life by a group of dedicated volunteers in the 1960's. (We're forward thinking here) While it can't offer a hair  Read more...

Park Review - Windom Northeast Park

June 04, 2008

As a child, I had a 6th sense for the locations of wings, I mean swings. Trips were generally spent trying to appease my desire to swing. I thought that being a Savvy City Expert would give M and I a chance to review some of the area neighborhood parks. You never know when you'll be close to one, and some of them are worth going a little out of the way for. Windom Northeast Park is in the  Read more...

Moby, Mozart or Miles

May 30, 2008

My husband and I have no musical talent. He sings well in the shower, but that is about is close as we come. We are however very experienced at music appreciation. It is something we doing our best to help M with. Of course, we're biased towards our choices. After she was born I would lull her back to sleep playing The Cure and Beatles songs in iTunes. Now that she is older and we have  Read more...
