The Gift You Make

December 08, 2008

Sometimes the gifts that kids make themselves are the best gifts that they can give.  After all, there aren't many preschoolers with a checking account.  Paint Your Own Pottery - There are a number of places around the Twin Cities, just check out your local listings.  I know they exist, but I had bad luck with google searches, since I know some that showed up have closed.  If you know of  Read more...

In the Heart of the Beast

October 16, 2008

I'm not talking about scary Halloween things here, I'm talking about puppets. National is talking puppets today, and you can't talk puppets around here with out HOTB . They are a local institution. Since I was just a wee one, I've been going to the May Day parade in Powderhorn Park. This worker's holiday is a great community event (yes, and very liberal) as well as a great showcase for HOTB  Read more...

For Any Age

September 29, 2008

We all know that it can be hard sometimes to find things to do with kids of different ages. That includes the kids posing as respectable adults. Here are a few things that I think work for all ages. Special thanks to my friends that helped with this list. The Science Museum of Minnesota - From the musical stairs to the wave generator, even little babies can find things to enjoy here. That  Read more...

Kiddywampus: More than toys for kids of every age.

September 24, 2008

One of the best parts about writing for Savvy Source is that I get to actively seek out cool things around the TC.  I scrounge websites, I look to see what other people are talking about, and then I try to check it out for myself.  When I was just getting started, I went to a neat toy store I had heard about called Kiddywampus .  The first thing I had found about them was their Action  Read more...

My Little Social Animal

September 03, 2008

M's adventures into the world of toddlers has meant that she has become a far more social animal. While the babies are cute, when you're ending up as the most advanced thing in the room, there isn't much of a lead. Since she's entered the world of toddlers, things have been changing at a rapid pace. The most fun one (excluding her love of saying purple over and over again) is how social she  Read more...

Ocean Crafty

August 20, 2008

My grandmother was infinitely crafty. There wasn't a craft that hadn't done one way or another. From knitting, to crochet, to embroidery, to that odd obsession with drying flowers in the late 80's, she did it all. However, my favorite will always be how she collected things. There was a "painting" of sorts in the house made entirely of shells. She let me collect and make things out of drift  Read more...

Getting Crafty At Home

July 31, 2008

While this weekend may be the trifecta of art fairs, your better bet might be staying home and getting crafty in your own yard/house, etc. Having done the art fairs in my younger child free days, I can't really say that I would want to go to them with kids. It is hot, the food is expensive, and it is crowded. If you simply must go, avoid the Uptown one, it was the worst of the bunch for  Read more...

Classes, camps, and other fun things to do

June 17, 2008

I'm going to admit here that I haven't done any of these, but I want to, I swear, after I find a few more hours in the day. For the working parents, pretty much all weekend options for classes cease for the summer, while everyone goes to their cabin (yeah, I know you don't have one either, but you can dream, right). However, nearly everything I list here does go weekend in some form  Read more...

Budding Art Critic

June 02, 2008

Everyone is a critic. Even little ones know what they like, and aren't afraid to express it. From my experience, young art lovers as falling into two camps. You have the classic, if it's a butterfly it better look like a butterfly crowd, and the but it's a fairy, and she's sad crowd. Fortunately here, we have something for everyone. Walker Art Center This year is the Sculpture  Read more...

5 Things to do on a rainy Minneapolis day

May 27, 2008

It is shaping up to be a cool, wet spring and start to summer. M just stands at the window and points at all of the things she would rather be doing, while looking up at us expectantly. Here are five things you can do even if the rain is getting you down. Open Studio at Kiddywampus 18months 7 years - 8 bucks per kid, no reservation needed. My favorite part, they do  Read more...

Littlest Piccaso

May 26, 2008

I was an art major, so I have been looking forward to kids art projects forever. When I was a nanny, it was one of my favorite things. I only wish I had access to some of these things. Art classes for the pre-school set aren't nearly as prolific as for school age, but there are some darn good options. If you can't find anything you like in your area, get a group together, put on some play  Read more...
