Kids Can Cook

November 26, 2008

I have to admit that I am looking forward to when M can cook with me. She is going to be getting a kitchen toy for Christmas just to start prepping her for what is ahead. (and because she likes to "cook" while I cook) When she is older, I have great resources for cooking with her. Mostly my mom. I tried to find one of the cookbooks that she used with us, but we couldn't track it down.  Read more...

Sick and stuck at home with (seemingly) nothing to do.

November 25, 2008

Well, we made it through it. There was much book reading, a little drawing, and anything else we could do to keep us busy. Here is my top eight list of things to do when you're really sick (temps over 105) Sleep - Good for both the sick kid, and the parent who was up half the night with the sick kid. We broke out rules and napped together a number of times. Fortunately she's  Read more...

Around the World in an Old Sears Building

August 01, 2008

The old Sears building on Lake Street was an eyesore to some, and a giant mythical location to others (I always thought it looked cool). No matter what you thought of it, no one wanted to see it sit empty. When Sears announced it was closing, plans were put in motion to save it, and the neighborhood. It took some time, but the result was well worth it. The core of the space (in  Read more...

Your love is better than ice cream...

July 25, 2008

Love may be better than ice cream, but there are few other things that are. Maybe it is because of all of the cows, or maybe because we need to get the most out of summer, but we have ice cream around here. Good ice cream. Seeing as this is my favorite treat, I didn't need any help from M figuring this list out. Which is good, because she hasn't had ice cream yet. Sebastian Joe's - No web  Read more...

Dinner Table Destinations

July 22, 2008

Having grown up vegetarian when few people in the Midwest were, I grew up on a steady diet of ethnic treats. From bean burritos to curries, I regularly sampled anything tasty (and vegetarian friendly) on our regular trips to the Twin Cities. While I'm firmly in the omnivore camp these days, that has translated into a great love of all things not exactly apple pie and hot dogs. Though I do  Read more...

Hot Summer Dogs

July 14, 2008

The weather this last weekend was pure summer perfection, and I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. First, a little background. In our family, food is an obsession. While we eat a healthy balanced diet at home (ok, fine, most of the time), we are on a mission to find the best of those one of a kind "treats" when out and about. Now, my Dad is from Chicago, so I learned that  Read more...

To Farmer's Market to Buy a Fat Tomato

June 23, 2008

Whether it was the spinach last summer, or the tomatoes this spring, the push for local has been a long time coming. City Mama's post made me think about how I am teaching M about my commitment to local, so this last weekend M and I braved the Minneapolis market while taking advantage of her being an early riser. This market has been around for over 70 years, and offers a wide selection of  Read more...
